The Drift Report 6-10-2024

Welcome to Offshore Observations Drift Report.

A weekly newsletter to keep you in the loop on offshore (and maybe inshore) fishing in the Northeast.

Things are Heating Up Fast

Wow did that happen fast... things went from slow and steady to red red hot in just a few days. In case you havent heard the bluefin tuna are here and they are chewing.

Maybe this is the new norm, but our tuna fishery here in the northeast continues to be world class. We have had consistent bluefin and yellowfin tuna fishing here for severl consecutive years now. The bite this year started about two weeks ago when crews began hooking numerous bluefin in the small to medium class out on West Atlantis. The fish (and life) has since moved in closer to shore and fisherman have been captalizing on a very, very, good bite.

The 54-65" bluefin that were in our waters last year seem to have returned, but are only bigger, and they have come accompanied by another group of smaller class fish.

Most fish have been caught trolling spreader bars and mixed baits, but several top water and jig bites have been reported as well.

In addition to the bluefin bite there have been reports of bigeye mixed in at the canyons (Atlantis) along with great tilefishing.

Gulf Stream Look

The weather last week has been great for getting accurate satellite shots. The turbulent water to the west along the hudson is still there and has appeared to broken off an eddy as predicted last week. This pocket of water should continue to the NE bringing perhaps our regions first shot at some Yellowfin and Bigeye for this season.

Tech Talk: Using Hollow Core Braid for Spinning Reels in Popping Setups for Bluefin and Yellowfin Tuna

When it comes to popping setups for bluefin and yellowfin tuna, anglers are always looking for that perfect combination of strength, sensitivity, and ease of handling. Enter hollow core braid—a game-changer for serious tuna fishermen. In this article, we'll dive into why hollow core braid is an excellent choice for your spinning reels when targeting these powerful predators and how to maximize its potential in your popping setups.

Why Choose Hollow Core Braid?

Strength and Capacity
Hollow core braid offers unmatched strength-to-diameter ratio, allowing you to spool more line on your spinning reel without sacrificing strength. This is crucial when you're battling giant bluefin or yellowfin tuna, which are known for their long, hard runs. A higher line capacity means you can better handle these extended fights without worrying about running out of line.

Smooth Line Management
One of the standout features of hollow core braid is its smoothness. This characteristic significantly reduces friction on the guides and spool, allowing for longer casts—a key advantage when you're working poppers from a distance. Smooth line flow also minimizes the chances of wind knots, which can be a common issue with traditional braids on spinning reels.

Easy Splicing and Knotless Connections
The hollow core structure allows for easy splicing, creating seamless, knotless connections. This means you can quickly and efficiently attach your leader to the mainline without bulky knots that can affect casting distance and accuracy. The ability to make these secure, streamlined connections is especially important when you're dealing with the heavy drag settings required for tuna fishing.

Setting Up Your Spinning Reel with Hollow Core Braid

Spooling Up
When spooling your spinning reel with hollow core braid, it's essential to ensure even and tight line lay. Start with a monofilament backing to prevent the braid from slipping on the spool, then attach the hollow core braid using a seamless splice or a strong knot like the FG knot. Fill the spool to about 1/8 inch below the rim to avoid overfilling, which can lead to line management issues.

Choosing the Right Leader
For popping setups targeting bluefin and yellowfin tuna, a strong fluorocarbon leader is recommended. Fluorocarbon provides abrasion resistance and is less visible in the water, giving you an edge in clear water conditions. Connect the leader to the hollow core braid using a spliced loop-to-loop connection or a strong knot like the PR knot for a streamlined and reliable setup.

Popping Techniques
With your spinning reel loaded with hollow core braid, you're ready to start popping. The sensitivity of the braid allows you to feel every movement of your lure, making it easier to detect strikes and adjust your retrieve. The strength and low stretch of the braid ensure solid hooksets, critical when a tuna slams your popper. Use a popping rod designed for heavy-duty action, and be prepared for explosive strikes and intense battles.

Benefits of Hollow Core Braid in Popping Setups

Enhanced Casting Distance
The smoothness and reduced friction of hollow core braid contribute to increased casting distance. This allows you to cover more water and reach schools of tuna that are farther away, increasing your chances of a successful hookup.

Superior Line Strength
Hollow core braid's high strength-to-diameter ratio means you can use heavier lines without sacrificing spool capacity. This is particularly important when targeting large tuna, as you need a line that can withstand their powerful runs and aggressive behavior.

Better Line Management
The ease of handling and reduced likelihood of wind knots with hollow core braid make it ideal for spinning reels. You'll spend less time dealing with line issues and more time fishing, maximizing your efficiency on the water.

Conclusion

Incorporating hollow core braid into your spinning reel setups for popping bluefin and yellowfin tuna offers numerous advantages. From increased line capacity and strength to improved casting distance and seamless leader connections, hollow core braid enhances your overall fishing experience. By setting up your gear correctly and mastering the popping technique, you'll be better prepared to tackle these formidable predators and enjoy the thrill of tuna fishing to the fullest.
